Your TFSA room, 2026
You can still put in up to $69,000 in 2026 without a penalty.
Room earned over the years
How it is worked out: room earned since you were eligible ($109,000), minus everything you have contributed through 2025 ($40,000), plus withdrawals made through 2025 ($0) gives your room on January 1, 2026 ($69,000). Then subtract what you have put in so far this year.

Things people get wrong
- Withdrawals come back next year, not this year. Take $10,000 out in 2026 and the room returns on January 1, 2027. Putting it back in 2026 can cause an over-contribution. If you plan to withdraw anyway, doing it before December 31 means the room returns sooner.
- Room is not use-it-or-lose-it. Unused room carries forward forever.
- Moving money between institutions should be a direct transfer, not a withdrawal and a deposit.
- Years outside Canada earn no room. Room starts again the year you become a resident. Gains and losses inside the account do not change your room.
- The CRA figure can lag. Check CRA My Account, and keep your own records of every contribution and withdrawal.
Annual limits are from the CRA: $5,000 (2009 to 2012), $5,500 (2013 and 2014), $10,000 (2015), $5,500 (2016 to 2018), $6,000 (2019 to 2022), $6,500 (2023) and $7,000 (2024 to 2026). A person eligible every year since 2009 has $109,000 of total room in 2026. The 2027 limit is indexed to inflation and rounded to $500, and is announced by the CRA, so change it above once it is known. Not for Quebec-specific or non-resident situations, and not tax advice.
