Disability support is a patchwork of federal credits, BC payments and Ministry programs. Budget 2026 changes a few pieces, so here’s how they fit together.
What’s the new children and youth disability supplement?
It’s an extra monthly payment added to the BC Family Benefit, starting July 1, 2027. Families can get up to $6,000 a year for each eligible child. It’s income-tested, reducing by 4% of family income above $50,000, and eligibility is based on entitlement to the federal disability tax credit.
It comes with a bigger redesign of support for children and youth with support needs. The budget includes $475 million over three years, with more direct funding to families and better coordination between health, education and community services.
Why the disability tax credit matters so much
The federal disability tax credit (DTC) needs a form completed by a qualified medical practitioner and approved by the CRA. Once approved, it can reduce your tax, and it can open the door to other supports, including this new BC supplement. If an approval is granted for earlier years, you can often ask for those years to be adjusted too, so it’s worth asking us.
What changed for couples on disability assistance?
- From December 1, 2025, couples where both receive disability assistance get the same support allowance as two single people
- From January 1, 2026, couples where one partner has the Persons with Disabilities designation get a higher annual earnings exemption, so they can keep more of what they earn
- The Province expects more than 6,500 families to benefit from equal rates and more than 4,300 from the earnings exemption
What other supports are out there?
Around 269,000 people receive income, disability or supplementary assistance. Supplementary help can include the Seniors’ Supplement, the Bus Pass and Transportation Supplement for persons with disabilities, crisis supplements and health supplements for things like dental care, diet and medical equipment.
What’s frozen?
The BC disability amount, one of the non-refundable credits, is part of the 2027 to 2030 freeze, so it won’t rise with inflation until 2031.
