If you have kids, a few of the best money supports in BC run quietly through your tax return. Here’s how they work and what Budget 2026 changes.

Quick answer: The BC Family Benefit is worked out from your filed tax return, so both spouses or partners need to file every year. Budget 2026 adds a children and youth disability supplement of up to $6,000 per eligible child, with payments starting July 1, 2027 and eligibility tied to the federal disability tax credit.

What is the BC Family Benefit?

It’s a monthly payment for families with children under 18. It isn’t taxable income, and it’s delivered through the income tax system, in the same monthly deposit as the federal Canada Child Benefit. The amount depends on your adjusted family net income and how many children you have, and it shrinks as income rises.

Do I have to apply?

Not separately. The amounts are worked out automatically from your tax return once your child is registered for the Canada Child Benefit. That’s why filing matters, even if you had little or no income. If you’re married or common-law, both of you need to file, and a missed or late return can pause your payments.

What’s new in Budget 2026?

The big addition is a children and youth disability supplement on top of the BC Family Benefit. Payments start July 1, 2027, and it’s part of the Province’s redesign of support for children and youth with support needs.

  • Up to $6,000 a year for each eligible child
  • Eligibility is based on entitlement to the federal disability tax credit
  • It’s income-tested: the maximum is reduced by 4% of family income above $50,000
  • It’s paid monthly alongside your BC Family Benefit

Why your 2026 tax return matters here

The Province says first payments in July 2027 are based on your 2026 tax return. So if your child may qualify, get the disability tax credit application approved and file your 2026 return on time, so the supplement isn’t delayed.

What about child care costs?

Budget 2026 puts $330 million over three years into child care, including the Child Care Fee Reduction Initiative. The Province says average daily fees for children 12 and under have dropped from $47 a day (about $940 a month) to $20 a day (about $400 a month) since 2018. It also adds $25 million over three years for school districts to expand before- and after-school care.

Whatever child care you still pay for may be deductible on your return. It’s usually claimed by the lower-income spouse or partner, so keep your receipts and the provider’s details handy.

A quick family checklist

  • Both partners file a return every year, on time
  • Register new babies for the Canada Child Benefit as soon as you can
  • Update the CRA if your marital status, address or custody arrangement changes
  • If your child has a medical condition that may qualify, ask about the disability tax credit now
  • Keep child care receipts and the provider’s name and ID
